Dutch carrier KLM to invest in the first European plant for sustainable aviation fuel

Solutions

Earlier this week, Dutch flag carrier KLM announced a sizable investment for the creation of the first European plant for sustainable fuel.

The plant will be developed by SkyNRG, a KLM partner which claims to be the global market leader in sustainable aviation fuel.

The production facility will be located in the Dutch municipality of Delfzijl and will specialize in the development of biofuels, mainly using regional organic waste streams (like used cooking oil) and residue streams from other industries as feedstock.

"From 2022, the plant will produce 100,000 tonnes a year, of which KLM will purchase 75,000 tonnes. This will reduce the company’s CO2 emissions by 200,000 tonnes a year, which is equal to the emissions released by 1,000 KLM flights between Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro," said Pieter Elbers, the president and CEO of KLM.

Right now, if aviation were a country, it’d be a top 10 polluter. Moreover, the rate of C02 emissions from air travel is growing much faster than any other form.

Here at Kinder, we believe that greener travel is one of the key ways in which we can tackle the climate crisis. That's why we decided to host an event dedicated to the future of sustainable aviation.

Titled "The Sky Has a Limit - Airplanes and Climate Change," the event will take place on the 17th of June at 6.30 pm at TQ, the Amsterdam tech hub where we're based in.

We’ll bring together representatives from research and technology, the aviation industry, and the not-for-profit sector to talk about sustainable air travel. We’ll hear more about the problem and a lot more about the solutions, including sustainable fuels like the ones that will be produced at the new SkyNRG plant.

Plus, there will be time to get a drink at TQ’s rooftop bar (which helps our friends from TQ support more events like this), cool down with Professor Grunschnabel's beloved vegan ice cream, and chat to fellow travelers about the steps you can take to travel greener.
